Balcony waterproofing
Roof waterproofing
In residential and commercial areas, terrace and balcony waterproofing is essential. A terrace that is improperly waterproofed or has a membrane that has reached the end of its service life can lead to issues such as leaks and structural damage, among other problems.
By applying Eagle’s Ultraflex liquid waterproofing system, you can prevent this and future issues in buildings with terraces.
Why roof waterproofing is important
Proper waterproofing of roofs, ceilings, and flat roofs not only prevents structural and safety issues, but also:
- It increases the durability of structural elements, thereby extending the building’s service life.
- It enhances the building’s aesthetics and can increase its value.
- It enables energy savings inside the building during the hottest months when membranes with heat-reflective properties are installed.
- It improves indoor air quality by reducing the growth of mold and other potentially harmful substances.
Our high-performance liquid waterproofing system for roofs stands out because:
- It is produced on-site, so it adapts perfectly to the roof’s shape, avoiding the common issues with prefabricated sheets.
- It requires no prior primer, and its fully reinforced wet-on-wet application method, with no waiting time between coats, enables waterproofing projects to be completed more quickly and safely.
- Once cured, it forms a fully watertight, elastic coating with no joints or overlaps, and is fully bonded to the substrate.
- It’s a single-component, ready-to-use product, eliminating the most common errors associated with two-component systems.
- It allows for on-site visual verification of proper consumption and application.
How to waterproof a terrace step by step
When applying Eagle’s Ultraflex terrace waterproofing system, to prevent cracks, leaks, and structural damage to terraces, it is crucial to:
- Clean any traces of dirt from the surface and remove contaminants that could affect the adhesion of the new system.
- Conduct a visual inspection and repair any existing cracks. To do this, fill any cracks with Ultraflex Sealant (MS Polymer) or, alternatively, with polyurethane sealant. If necessary, general milling may be performed at the discretion of the installer. Treat expansion joints appropriately, if present.
- Ensure that the surface to be waterproofed is firm, dry, and in good condition. If needed, Eagle offers a range of substrate preparation resins for these preliminary tasks (UltraPrime PRO, UltraPrime REG, UltraDry). Our technical department can provide more information on this subject.
- Apply the liquid waterproofing for terraces using a wet-on-wet application method (double coat while wet), fully reinforced with Eagle Matting, to create a membrane with a minimum thickness of 1.2 mm to 1.5 mm.
- Finishing: once the membrane is dry, we will apply the necessary finish based on the aesthetic and functional goals for the terrace.
- When the membrane is exposed to sunlight or traffic (whether from people or vehicles), apply a thin layer of aliphatic polyurethane (Ultratop, Ultratop WR, or Cooltop, depending on the goal), optionally mixed with Ultraflex Grip if a non-slip finish is required.
- The membrane allows for multiple finishes: installation of bonded pavements (ceramic, tile, etc.), floating pavements, etc. In these cases, applying this topcoat will not be necessary.
Advantages of balcony waterproofing and terrace waterproofing with a liquid polyurethane membrane
Using this liquid waterproofing system offers numerous benefits:
- Material cost. Since it is compatible with and adheres to most substrates, a bonding agent (primer) is not required, allowing the terrace waterproofing product to be applied directly. Additionally, it has a high solids content, meaning there’s no need to apply multiple coats or use a large amount of material. Generally, between 1.5 and 2 kg/m2 is sufficient to create a long-lasting membrane.
- Operational cost. The wet-on-wet application method, fully reinforced with Eagle Matting, saves on labor time and allows the job to be completed faster than with other layered application systems.
- Multiple finishes. A system that allows for any type of finish to suit the aesthetics and functionality of the terrace (exposed walkable surfaces, ceramic tile floors, floating floors, gravel, gardens, etc.).
- Warranties ranging from 10 to 25 years. Unlike traditional sheet systems, which generally don’t withstand the elements well, or older liquid systems (drip-proofing), which degrade easily, Eagle systems are designed for the long term.
Eagle offers several systems for waterproofing terraces. Ultraflex is an excellent choice for long-term durability and demanding applications. Clearcoat, a transparent waterproofing membrane for terraces, is the ideal solution when maintaining aesthetics is a priority.
